Blog Post 8: Video Game Final
Race of the Teleporting Cars is complete! There are 10 full, interesting, and unique levels, and a story! The core mechanic of teleportation was so fun to work with over the course of this game. Designing levels with it in mind led to many fun ideas such as cutting corners and perfectly spacing obstacles to time your way through. Some levels are also just a bit of a mess to explore, then find the fastest path through. Each level also has a unique background courtesy of stable diffusion, and there are two songs (one for Tutorial-5, one for 6-Finale). Peter, my partner, wrote the first one, and I wrote the second one. I think the change in background and music made each level feel different and unique enough.Â
The game also features a simple, but full story between famous racer and inventor Dr. Luminara, and upcoming racer Zara Nova. Starting cocky and arrogant, Luminara taunts and "mentors" Nova through each level. However, over the course of the races, Luminara begins to see Nova as a formidable, and respectable racer. Each level has different dialogue for failing, for qualifying, and for beating Luminara's time, and if you beat Luminara's time on each stage, you unlock the finale: a traditional track where you're not supposed to teleport or cheat. Beating Luminara's time on this course leads to her passing the reins over to the new generation. Overall, we are very happy we were able to incorporate a story into the game, and have it feel like it means something.
